Accusations of rights violations against Timorese police continue

Local people reported PNTL’s brutality to MPs Televizaun Timor-Leste March 2, 2010 language source: Tetun -  Orlando Cardoso, a local member of the CPD-RDTL from Kasabauk village in Tilomar of Kovalima District accused the PNTL of exercising excessive use of force against him.

Cardoso said that at 9 P.M of February 21, he was arrested and then taken to the local office of the Border Patrol Unit where he was severely tortured.

Mr. Cardoso believed that he was arrested because of hoisting the flag of the CPD-RDTL.

“They came here for Ninjas, not for flag hoisting,” he argued.

He also said that since Timor-Leste adopts democratic principles, he should not be arrested because of his political convictions.
